Choose IELTS Academic or General Training correctly

Listening and Speaking use the same broad test format in IELTS Academic and General Training, while Reading and Writing differ. Academic Reading uses texts suited to an academic context, and Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to describe visual information. General Training Reading uses everyday and workplace material, while Writing Task 1 is a letter.

Before starting a full IELTS practice test, confirm which test your university, employer, professional body, or visa pathway accepts. Practising the wrong Reading and Writing version can produce misleading timing and score expectations.

Compare IELTS Academic and General Training.

IELTS practice test structure and timing

SkillPublished test timeWhat to practiseBest review evidence
ListeningAbout 30 minutes, plus transfer/checking time where applicableFour parts and 40 questionsThe exact words, paraphrases, and distractors in the audio
Reading60 minutesThree sections and 40 questionsThe sentence or passage evidence for every answer
Writing60 minutesTask 1 and Task 2A revised response linked to the four public assessment criteria
Speaking11-14 minutesParts 1, 2, and 3A recording, transcript, and one targeted re-recording

Computer and paper delivery can change the mechanics of answering, but not the need to manage time. Check the official IELTS site and your booking confirmation for the current local process.

How to turn an IELTS mock test into a study plan

  1. Take a diagnostic under time limits. Do not pause to look up vocabulary or rewrite answers during the attempt.
  2. Separate score loss from time loss. Mark questions you could answer with more time differently from questions you did not understand.
  3. Classify errors. For receptive skills, use categories such as paraphrase, detail, inference, spelling, or pacing. For productive skills, use the published assessment criteria.
  4. Repair one pattern. Complete a focused drill, rewrite a weak paragraph, or re-record a weak answer.
  5. Retest with new material. Improvement on the same questions may reflect memory rather than transferable skill.

Practice with answers is only useful when you review the evidence

For Listening and Reading, a score alone does not tell you whether the problem was language knowledge, attention, spelling, or time management. Review why the correct answer fits and why each tempting alternative does not.

For Writing and Speaking, compare the response with the public IELTS criteria. Automated feedback can highlight a possible weakness, but it should be tested by revising or re-recording. Do not treat a practice band estimate as a guaranteed official band.

A balanced weekly IELTS practice schedule

SessionWorkOutput
1Timed Listening or Reading sectionError log with textual or audio evidence
2Writing Task 1 or Task 2Original response, feedback, and revision
3Speaking Parts 1-3Recording, transcript, and re-recording
4Weak-skill drillsShort set focused on one recurring error
5Full section or four-skill mockUpdated priorities for the next week

Adjust the volume to your available time. Keeping a review artefact from each session matters more than accumulating a large count of unfinished tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the English AIdol IELTS practice test free?

A free account includes one completed first attempt in each available IELTS area: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. Sign-in is required before a full test starts. Repeat attempts in the same area and advanced reports can require IELTS Pro.

Where can I take an IELTS practice test?

Use English AIdol's full mock selector for four matched sections or open separate Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking practice pages. The material and score estimates are independent practice, not official IELTS content or results.

How long is a full IELTS practice test?

Published section times are about 30 minutes for Listening plus applicable transfer or checking time, 60 minutes for Reading, 60 minutes for Writing, and 11-14 minutes for Speaking. Local scheduling and delivery instructions can vary.

Should I practise IELTS Academic or General Training?

Use the version accepted by your receiving organisation. Reading and Writing differ between Academic and General Training, so verify the required test before choosing a mock.

Are AI IELTS band estimates official?

No. Automated band estimates are study guidance and can differ from an official result. Use them to identify patterns, revise, and compare practice attempts.
