PTE Writing planning and revision workshop
Practise selecting a central claim, covering an essay prompt, and revising a sentence without relying on a memorised template.
How to try it: Draft your answer or plan first. Then use the checklist to revise one decision rather than copying the sample direction.
1. Summarize Written Text
City trees cool streets by shading hard surfaces and releasing water vapour. The effect is not evenly distributed because neighbourhoods with fewer mature trees can remain several degrees warmer. Some councils now use heat maps to prioritise planting where exposure and health risks are greatest.
Write one sentence that captures the central claim and the important contrast.
Answer or self-check: Sample direction: Although city trees reduce heat through shade and water release, their uneven distribution leaves some neighbourhoods warmer, prompting councils to target planting with heat-risk maps.
Why: The sentence combines the cooling mechanism, the inequality, and the response without turning a supporting detail into the main point.
2. Write Essay
Some employers allow staff to choose when they begin and finish work. Do the advantages of flexible hours outweigh the disadvantages?
Answer or self-check: Plan: take a clear position; develop one advantage such as matching work to productive hours; develop a second such as reduced commuting pressure; address a limitation such as coordination; explain why your chosen side still carries more weight.
Why: The prompt requires a comparative judgement. Listing benefits and drawbacks without saying which outweighs the other leaves the task unanswered.
3. Sentence revision
Flexible schedules are good and workers like them and companies can have problems with meetings.
Revise the sentence so the benefit and limitation have a clear relationship.
Answer or self-check: Although flexible schedules can improve employee satisfaction, companies need shared working hours to coordinate meetings effectively.
Why: “Although” makes the contrast explicit, while the revised clauses replace vague words with specific claims.
