Model Answers
Band 6.0 Answer
Social media has good and bad points. On one hand, it helps people communicate and share information quickly. For example, Facebook lets families stay in touch even when they live far apart. On the other hand, some people spend too much time on social media and don't do other important things. Many students waste time on Instagram instead of studying.
Another advantage is that social media can help businesses grow. Companies use Twitter to advertise products and reach more customers. However, there are also problems with privacy. Hackers can steal personal information from social media accounts. In my opinion, the good things about social media are more important than the bad things.
Scoring Breakdown
- Task Response (TR): Addresses all parts of the task but with limited development
- Coherence & Cohesion (CC): Presents information with some organization but lacks clear progression

- Grammatical Range & Accuracy (GRA): Makes frequent errors in sentence formation
Band 7.0 Answer
Social networking platforms offer numerous benefits but also present significant drawbacks to users. The primary advantage is improved communication. Applications like WhatsApp enable real-time conversations across vast distances. Additionally, these platforms serve as valuable educational tools, providing access to information and online courses. Conversely, excessive usage can lead to addiction and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.
Another notable benefit is the opportunity for business growth. Companies utilize platforms like LinkedIn for networking and marketing purposes. However, privacy concerns remain a major issue, with data breaches and identity theft being common occurrences. In my view, while social media has clear advantages, users must be cautious about its potential negative impacts.
Scoring Breakdown
- Task Response (TR): Presents a clear position throughout the response
- Coherence & Cohesion (CC): Logically organizes information with clear progression
- Lexical Resource (LR): Uses a mix of common and less common vocabulary appropriately
- Grammatical Range & Accuracy (GRA): Makes occasional errors but generally communicates effectively
Band 8.0 Answer
The proliferation of social media has transformed modern communication, yielding both profound benefits and concerning drawbacks. One of the most significant advantages is the facilitation of global connectivity. Platforms such as Facebook have transcended geographical boundaries, enabling instantaneous communication between individuals worldwide. Furthermore, social media serves as an invaluable educational resource, offering access to diverse perspectives and knowledge.
However, the overuse of these platforms can result in detrimental effects on mental health. Numerous studies have linked excessive social media consumption to increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, the pervasive issue of privacy violations cannot be overlooked, as personal data is frequently exploited for commercial purposes. Despite these concerns, I contend that the benefits of social media outweigh the disadvantages when used responsibly.

Band 9.0 Answer
The digital age has witnessed an unprecedented expansion of social media platforms, which have indisputably revolutionized interpersonal communication while concurrently introducing complex societal challenges. The most compelling advantage is the democratization of information dissemination. Platforms like Twitter have empowered individuals to share news instantaneously, fostering global awareness and collective action on critical issues. Moreover, these digital spaces have become vibrant hubs for professional networking and skill development, as evidenced by the proliferation of LinkedIn learning communities.
However, the dark side of this digital phenomenon cannot be disregarded. The insidious nature of cyberbullying has emerged as a pervasive menace, particularly among adolescents, with devastating psychological repercussions. Furthermore, the commodification of personal data has raised grave ethical concerns, as corporations exploit user information for targeted advertising and political manipulation. In my nuanced perspective, while social media's benefits are manifold, mitigating its detrimental effects requires proactive regulatory measures and digital literacy initiatives.
