The Prompt

Some people think that social media is a good way to communicate with others, while others think it is a waste of time. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Sample Answers

Band 6.0 Answer

Social media is a popular way to communicate with others, but some people think it is a waste of time. I agree with this view.

Firstly, social media can be a waste of time because people spend too much time on it. For example, many people spend hours scrolling through their feeds without doing anything productive. This can lead to addiction and other problems. Secondly, social media can be harmful to mental health. Studies have shown that people who spend a lot of time on social media are more likely to feel anxious and depressed. Therefore, I think that social media is not a good way to communicate with others.

However, some people think that social media is a good way to communicate with others. They argue that it allows people to stay in touch with friends and family who live far away. Additionally, social media can be used for business purposes, such as marketing and advertising. While these are valid points, I still think that the negative effects of social media outweigh the positive ones.

Band 7.0 Answer

Social media has become an integral part of modern life, but opinions on its value are divided.

On the one hand, social media offers numerous benefits. It enables instant communication with friends and family, regardless of distance. For instance, platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp allow people to share updates and photos, fostering a sense of connection. Moreover, social media can be a powerful tool for businesses, providing cost-effective marketing and advertising opportunities. These advantages make social media a valuable communication tool.

On the other hand, social media has its drawbacks. Excessive use can lead to addiction and negatively impact mental health. Studies have linked prolonged social media use to increased levels of anxiety and depression. Additionally, the spread of misinformation and cyberbullying are serious concerns. Despite these issues, the benefits of social media outweigh the drawbacks, in my opinion.

  • Coherence and Cohesion (CC): Ideas are logically organized with clear progression and appropriate use of cohesive devices. (Band 7.0)

Band 8.0 Answer

The proliferation of social media has sparked a debate regarding its utility as a communication tool.

Proponents argue that social media facilitates seamless communication and connection. Platforms like Instagram and Twitter allow users to share experiences and engage in real-time conversations, bridging geographical divides. Furthermore, social media has revolutionized business communication, enabling targeted marketing and customer engagement. These advantages underscore the positive impact of social media on modern communication.

However, critics highlight the potential downsides. The addictive nature of social media can lead to decreased productivity and mental health issues. The spread of fake news and the prevalence of cyberbullying are also significant concerns. Despite these challenges, the benefits of social media, when used responsibly, far outweigh the drawbacks.
