The Prompt

Some people believe that international trade is essential for economic growth, while others argue that it leads to exploitation. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Band 6.5 Sample Answer

The international trade has become a significant part of the global economy. While some people argue that it is essential for economic growth, others believe it leads to exploitation. This essay will discuss both views and give my opinion.

On one hand, international trade can bring many benefits to countries. Firstly, it allows countries to specialize in producing goods and services that they are good at, which can lead to increased efficiency and lower costs. Secondly, trade can provide access to new markets and customers, which can boost economic growth. For example, many developing countries have seen significant economic growth by exporting their goods to other countries.

On the other hand, some people argue that international trade can lead to exploitation. They believe that powerful countries can take advantage of weaker countries by imposing unfair trade agreements or paying low wages to workers in developing countries. For instance, some multinational corporations have been criticized for exploiting workers in poor countries by paying them very low wages.

In my opinion, international trade is generally beneficial for economic growth, but it is important to ensure that it is conducted fairly and ethically. Governments and international organizations should work together to create fair trade agreements and protect the rights of workers in all countries.
