Quick answer: HKU's international undergraduate admissions page lists IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, achieved in one attempt, as one way to meet its 2026 English-language requirement.
Accepted English evidence for international undergraduate applicants
| Evidence | Published minimum |
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall in the same attempt |
| TOEFL iBT | 93 in the same attempt |
| PTE Academic | 64 |
HKU also lists qualifying results from IB, GCE/IGCSE, Cambridge English, SAT, and certain country-specific school qualifications. A year of full-time bachelor's-or-higher study at a recognised English-medium university may also meet the requirement under the published conditions.
Test timing and version rules
For the 2026 undergraduate intake, HKU says the IELTS or TOEFL test must fall within the specified two-year period before 1 September 2026. It does not accept IELTS Indicator/IELTS Online or TOEFL Home Edition for this particular requirement. Check the current page for later intakes.
Undergraduate and postgraduate rules are not identical
This article covers HKU's international undergraduate route. Taught postgraduate, research, medicine, law, business, and other programmes may publish separate minimums, section requirements, waivers, or document rules. Meeting the university minimum also does not guarantee admission.
