Quick answer: Stanford GSB applies an education-language rule, not a citizenship rule. Applicants whose university taught any undergraduate courses other than foreign-language classes in a language other than English must submit an accepted English test, unless they later completed a graduate programme taught exclusively in English.
Who must submit an English test?
Stanford GSB says citizenship and work experience do not create an exemption. If every class in either your undergraduate or graduate degree was taught exclusively in English, a test is normally not required. Stanford may still ask for additional proof during review, so explain an English-medium degree clearly when the institution is in a country where English is not the main language of daily life.
Current Stanford GSB minimum scores
| Test | Minimum |
| TOEFL iBT taken before 21 January 2026 | 100 |
| TOEFL iBT taken on or after 21 January 2026 | 5.0 on the 1–6 scale |
| IELTS Academic | 7.0 overall |
| PTE Academic | 68 overall |
Use the score from one complete test sitting. Stanford says it does not average English-test scores and does not accept TOEFL MyBest scores for the MBA requirement.
Deadline, validity, and reporting
- Take the test before the deadline for the application round.
- The score must be valid on that round's deadline; Stanford treats these scores as valid for two years.
- Self-report the selected score in the application and arrange official delivery through the test provider.
- For IELTS and PTE, select Stanford University and the Graduate School of Business MBA programme; for TOEFL, Stanford lists institution code 4704.
