TOEIC score ranges
| Test | Score | Range | Format |
| TOEIC Listening and Reading | Listening | 5–495 | 100 questions in Parts 1–4, about 45 minutes |
| Reading | 5–495 | 100 questions in Parts 5–7, 75 minutes |
| Total | 10–990 | Sum of the two section scores, in 5-point steps |
| TOEIC Speaking and Writing | Speaking | 0–200 | 11 questions, about 20 minutes |
| Writing | 0–200 | 8 questions, about 60 minutes |
Listening and Reading scores are based on the number of questions answered correctly, converted to the score scale so that results from different test forms are comparable. Wrong answers are not subtracted, so answer every question.
TOEIC Listening and Reading to CEFR: ETS minimum scores
| CEFR level | Listening minimum | Reading minimum | Sum of both minimums |
| C1 | 490 | 455 | 945 |
| B2 | 400 | 385 | 785 |
| B1 | 275 | 275 | 550 |
| A2 | 110 | 115 | 225 |
| A1 | 60 | 60 | 120 |
Three details matter when you use this table:
- The mapping is by section. A total of 785 could be 450 Listening plus 335 Reading, which is B2 for Listening but below the B2 Reading minimum. Check both section scores against any CEFR requirement.
- The cut scores are guidelines. ETS describes them as minimum scores set by a standard-setting panel, and notes that the Reading C1 cut had lower panel agreement than the others.
- Lower levels are better measured by TOEIC Bridge. ETS suggests the TOEIC Bridge tests for more precise measurement at A1 to B1.
The TOEIC to CEFR converter gives a quick total-score estimate; use the section table above when a requirement names a CEFR level.

Worked example: does this score meet a B2 requirement?
| Candidate | Listening | Reading | Total | Meets both B2 minimums? |
| A | 420 | 390 | 810 | Yes: 420 ≥ 400 and 390 ≥ 385 |
| B | 460 | 350 | 810 | No: Reading is 35 points below 385 |
| C | 395 | 400 | 795 | No: Listening is 5 points below 400 |
Candidates A and B have the same total, but only A meets a B2 requirement in both skills. Candidate B's quickest route is Reading practice; Candidate C needs only a small Listening gain. The candidates are hypothetical.
Where Listening and Reading points come from
| Section | Part | Task | Questions |
| Listening | 1 | Photographs | 6 |
| 2 | Question-Response | 25 |
| 3 | Conversations | 39 |
| 4 | Talks | 30 |
| Reading | 5 | Incomplete Sentences | 30 |
| 6 | Text Completion | 16 |
| 7 | Reading Comprehension | 54 |
Parts 3, 4 and 7 contain most of the questions, so steady accuracy there usually moves a section score more than perfecting the shorter parts.
What is a good TOEIC score?
A good score is the one your employer, school or programme asks for. Before setting a target, check:
- Whether the requirement is a total score, section scores or a CEFR level.
- Whether it names TOEIC Listening and Reading, TOEIC Speaking and Writing, or both.
- Whether it accepts Public Test results only, or also institutional (IP) results.
- How recent the score must be.
If no requirement exists yet, use your section scores to choose practice: the lower section usually offers the faster improvement.
How long TOEIC scores are valid
ETS does not report TOEIC scores that are more than two years old, and score reports are available for two years after the test date. Receiving organisations can set their own, sometimes shorter, limits. If you tested in Japan, the TOEIC result timeline explains when Public Test scores and certificates are issued.
