Free TOEFL exam practice: what to practise now
The current TOEFL iBT is not the pre-2026 test. Reading and Listening are multistage adaptive. Speaking uses Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview. Writing uses Build a Sentence, Write an Email, and Write for an Academic Discussion.
ETS lists about 90 minutes of base section time and advises test takers to allow about two hours for the full appointment, including directions and variation in an adaptive test.

How to practise TOEFL Reading
- Complete the Words: restore missing letters by using grammar, word form, collocation, and paragraph meaning together.
- Read in Daily Life: scan practical texts such as notices, messages, schedules, and instructions for purpose and precise details.
- Read an Academic Passage: identify the main claim, paragraph function, evidence, vocabulary in context, and supported inference.
Because Reading is adaptive, practise accuracy and pacing together. Do not rush early items merely to save time for a later passage.
How to practise TOEFL Listening
Rotate through all four current listening families. For short response items, listen for the speaker's intent rather than matching repeated words. For conversations, announcements, and academic talks, take compact notes that preserve the purpose, change of direction, examples, and key details.
After each set, locate the exact audio evidence for the correct answer and explain why every distractor fails. This review is more useful than replaying the same audio until it feels familiar.
How to practise TOEFL Speaking
Listen and Repeat rewards accurate perception and clear reproduction of the sentence you hear. Practise in short cycles: listen once, repeat without reading, compare your recording with the source, then repeat again with attention to omitted words, stress, linking, and intonation.
Take an Interview requires an immediate, relevant response. Practise answering one clear question at a time with a direct position, a reason, and a concrete detail. Avoid forcing a memorised speech onto a question it does not answer.
English AIdol feedback is an unofficial study estimate. It can help you notice patterns, but it is not an ETS score and does not reproduce ETS's scoring system.
How to practise TOEFL Writing
- Build a Sentence: focus on clause order, agreement, tense, modifiers, and the relationship between ideas.
- Write an Email: identify the recipient, purpose, required details, and appropriate level of politeness before drafting.
- Write for an Academic Discussion: add a distinct contribution that answers the prompt and develops a reason or example instead of only restating other posts.
Review in two passes: first for task completion and organisation, then for grammar, vocabulary, and sentence control. Rewrite one weak response rather than collecting feedback that you never apply.
Set a target on the current 1-6 score scale
Current TOEFL score reports use section and overall scores from 1 to 6 in half-band increments. During the transition through January 2028, ETS also reports a comparable overall score on the prior 0-120 scale.
Use the score required by your receiving institution, not a generic internet definition of a "good" TOEFL score. Requirements can differ by programme and may include section minimums.
