SAT guide

SAT Math:
Topics, Answer Formats, Desmos Strategy and Examples

SAT Math has 44 questions in two 35-minute modules. About 70% of the questions come from Algebra and Advanced Math, a calculator is allowed throughout, and about a quarter of the questions ask you to type your own answer instead of choosing one.

What this guide covers

SAT Math domains and the skills inside them

DomainApproximate shareSkills
AlgebraAbout 35%Linear equations in one variable; linear equations in two variables; linear functions; systems of two linear equations; linear inequalities
Advanced MathAbout 35%Equivalent expressions; nonlinear equations and systems; nonlinear functions, including quadratic and exponential functions
Problem-Solving and Data AnalysisAbout 15%Ratios, rates, proportions and units; percentages; one-variable data; two-variable data and scatterplots; probability; inference from samples and margin of error; evaluating statistical claims
Geometry and TrigonometryAbout 15%Area and volume; lines, angles and triangles; right triangles and trigonometry; circles

Because Algebra and Advanced Math make up most of the section, fluency with linear equations, systems, quadratics and exponential models usually gives the largest return on study time.

Student-produced response entry rules

About three-quarters of SAT Math questions are four-option multiple choice. For the rest, you type your answer. College Board's entry rules are:

  • Enter up to 5 characters for a positive answer and up to 6 characters, including the negative sign, for a negative answer.
  • If a fraction does not fit, enter its decimal equivalent.
  • If a decimal does not fit, truncate or round it at the fourth digit.
  • Enter a mixed number such as 3½ as an improper fraction (7/2) or a decimal (3.5).
  • Do not enter symbols such as a percent sign, comma or dollar sign.
  • If you find more than one correct answer, enter only one.

When the built-in Desmos calculator saves time

Question typeDesmos approach
Solve a system of equationsGraph both equations and read the intersection point.
Find the zeros or vertex of a quadraticGraph the function and click the highlighted x-intercepts or minimum and maximum point.
Count solutionsGraph each side of the equation and count the intersections.
Check an algebraic answerSubstitute your answer or graph both expressions to confirm they match.

Algebra is still faster for many one-step questions. Practise both methods so you choose the quicker one rather than graphing everything.

Original worked examples

These examples were written by English AIdol to illustrate common question types. They are not official SAT questions.

1. Linear model (Algebra)

A gym charges a $40 joining fee and $25 per month. Which equation gives the total cost C, in dollars, after m months?

Answer: C = 25m + 40. The monthly charge multiplies the number of months; the joining fee is added once.

2. System of equations (Algebra)

If x + y = 12 and 3x − y = 8, what is the value of x?

Answer: 5. Adding the equations eliminates y: 4x = 20, so x = 5 and y = 7. In Desmos, the two lines intersect at (5, 7).

3. Percent change (Problem-Solving and Data Analysis)

A jacket's price is reduced by 20%, and the reduced price is then increased by 10%. The final price is what percent of the original price?

Answer: 88. Multiply the factors: 0.80 × 1.10 = 0.88. Enter 88 without a percent sign.

4. Quadratic minimum (Advanced Math)

What is the minimum value of f(x) = x² − 6x + 5?

Answer: −4. The vertex is at x = 6 ÷ 2 = 3, and f(3) = 9 − 18 + 5 = −4. Enter -4; negative answers may use up to 6 characters.

5. Right-triangle trigonometry (Geometry and Trigonometry)

A right triangle has legs of length 6 and 8. What is the sine of the angle opposite the side of length 6?

Answer: 3/5 or 0.6. The hypotenuse is √(6² + 8²) = 10, and sine is opposite ÷ hypotenuse = 6/10.

Word problems for English learners

Many SAT Math questions are set in a real-world context, so reading accuracy affects maths scores. These phrases translate directly into symbols:

PhraseMeaningExample
at least≥"at least 30 tickets" → t ≥ 30
no more than / at most≤"no more than $200" → c ≤ 200
exceeds / more than>"exceeds 5 hours" → h > 5
perdivide, or a rate"60 kilometres per hour" → 60 km ÷ 1 h
of (with percentages)multiply"15% of the total" → 0.15T
is / results in="twice a number is 18" → 2n = 18

Underline what the question asks for before solving. A correct value for the wrong quantity, such as y instead of x, is a common error.

Pacing in a 35-minute module

Each Math module gives about 95 seconds per question on average. Questions within a module generally become harder towards the end, so avoid spending several minutes on one early item. Mark it, move on and return with the time you save on quicker questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What topics are on SAT Math?

SAT Math covers Algebra and Advanced Math (about 35% each), plus Problem-Solving and Data Analysis and Geometry and Trigonometry (about 15% each).

Can I use a calculator on SAT Math?

Yes, on every Math question. Use the Desmos graphing calculator built into Bluebook or an approved calculator of your own.

Are formulas given on the SAT?

Yes. A reference sheet of common formulas is available during the Math section.

How do I enter a negative or fractional answer on SAT Math?

Negative answers can use up to 6 characters, including the minus sign. If a fraction does not fit, enter its decimal equivalent, truncated or rounded at the fourth digit.
