IELTS Writing Task 2: Globalization — Band 6/7/8/9 Samples

Prompt

Task: Some people believe that globalization has positive effects on the world, while others argue that it has negative impacts. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Band 6.0 Sample

Bài viết Band 6.0

Globalization is a big topic in the world today. Some people think it is good, while others think it is bad. I will discuss both sides.

On the one hand, globalization helps countries trade more easily. For example, products from one country can be sold in another country. This helps businesses grow and creates jobs. Also, people can learn about different cultures and technologies. For example, the internet helps people share information quickly.

On the other hand, globalization can cause problems. Some people think it makes rich countries richer and poor countries poorer. Big companies can take over small businesses, and local cultures can be lost. For example, fast food from America is everywhere, and local food is not as popular.

In my opinion, globalization has more good effects than bad. We should try to make sure it helps everyone, not just a few countries.

  • Coherence and Cohesion (CC): 6.0 - Uses some cohesive devices but there are some problems with organization.
  • Lexical Resource (LR): 6.0 - Uses a mix of appropriate and less appropriate vocabulary.

Band 7.0 Sample

Bài viết Band 7.0

Globalization has become a significant phenomenon in the modern world, bringing both benefits and drawbacks. This essay will explore both perspectives and present my personal viewpoint.

On the positive side, globalization facilitates international trade and economic growth. Countries can import and export goods more easily, which boosts their economies. For instance, China has become a major exporter of electronics, creating numerous jobs for its citizens. Additionally, globalization promotes cultural exchange. People can learn about different traditions, cuisines, and languages, which enriches their lives. For example, the spread of K-pop and Korean dramas has introduced many people to Korean culture.

However, globalization also has its downsides. It can lead to economic inequality. Wealthy nations often dominate global markets, making it difficult for poorer countries to compete. Moreover, globalization can threaten local cultures. The influence of Western culture, for example, can overshadow traditional practices and languages. In Vietnam, the rise of fast food chains has led to a decline in traditional dining habits.

In conclusion, while globalization has some negative impacts, I believe its benefits outweigh the drawbacks. It is essential to manage globalization in a way that benefits all countries equally.

Scoring Breakdown

  • Task Response (TR): 7.0 - Presents a clear position with relevant, extended arguments.
  • Coherence and Cohesion (CC): 7.0 - Uses cohesive devices effectively, but there are some minor issues with organization.
  • Lexical Resource (LR): 7.0 - Uses a sufficient range of vocabulary, but there are some inaccuracies.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA): 7.0 - Makes some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they do not impede understanding.

Band 8.0 Sample

Bài viết Band 8.0

The phenomenon of globalization has sparked intense debate regarding its impact on the world. While some argue that it brings about numerous advantages, others contend that it has detrimental effects. This essay will delve into both perspectives before presenting my own stance.

Proponents of globalization assert that it fosters economic growth and cultural exchange. From an economic standpoint, globalization enables countries to engage in international trade, thereby boosting their economies. For example, Vietnam's integration into the global market has led to significant economic growth and job creation. Furthermore, globalization promotes cultural exchange, allowing people to learn about different traditions and lifestyles. The popularity of Vietnamese coffee in Western countries is a testament to this cultural exchange.

Conversely, opponents of globalization argue that it exacerbates economic inequality and threatens local cultures. Wealthy nations often dominate global markets, making it challenging for poorer countries to compete. Additionally, the influence of Western culture can overshadow traditional practices. For instance, the proliferation of fast food chains in Vietnam has led to a decline in traditional dining habits.

In my view, globalization has more positive effects than negative ones. However, it is crucial to manage globalization in a way that benefits all countries equally. Governments should implement policies that protect local cultures and ensure fair trade practices.

Scoring Breakdown

  • Task Response (TR): 8.0 - Presents a clear position with relevant, extended, and supported arguments.
  • Coherence and Cohesion (CC): 8.0 - Uses cohesive devices effectively, and the arguments are logically organized.
  • Lexical Resource (LR): 8.0 - Uses a wide range of vocabulary appropriately and flexibly.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA): 8.0 - Uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms with minimal errors.

Band 9.0 Sample

Bài viết Band 9.0

The pervasive influence of globalization has engendered a contentious discourse on its multifaceted impacts. While proponents extol its virtues, detractors decry its deleterious effects. This essay will critically examine both viewpoints before proffering a nuanced perspective.

Advocates of globalization posit that it engenders economic prosperity and cultural enrichment. Economically, globalization facilitates international trade, thereby catalyzing economic growth. The Asian Tigers, for example, have leveraged globalization to achieve remarkable economic development. Culturally, globalization fosters intercultural dialogue, enabling people to appreciate diverse traditions. The global popularity of Vietnamese pho is a case in point.

Conversely, critics of globalization contend that it engenders economic disparity and cultural homogenization. Wealthy nations often exploit global markets, marginalizing poorer countries. Culturally, the hegemony of Western culture can erode traditional practices. The ubiquity of fast food chains in Vietnam, for instance, has supplanted traditional dining customs.

In my view, globalization is a double-edged sword. While it has engendered significant benefits, its detrimental effects cannot be overlooked. It is incumbent upon governments to implement policies that mitigate its negative impacts and ensure equitable benefits for all nations.

Scoring Breakdown

  • Task Response (TR): 9.0 - Presents a clear position with relevant, extended, and supported arguments.
  • Coherence and Cohesion (CC): 9.0 - Uses cohesive devices effectively, and the arguments are logically organized and presented.
  • Lexical Resource (LR): 9.0 - Uses a wide range of vocabulary appropriately, flexibly, and precisely.
