IELTS vs TOEFL for Australia 2026: Which Test for Study, Work & Migration?
Honest 2026 comparison of IELTS, TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic for Australian study, skilled migration and 482 work visas. Score equivalents, costs in AUD, test-day differences, who should pick which test, and how AI prep changes the calculus.
IELTS vs TOEFL for Australia 2026: Which Test for Study, Work & Migration?
Quick answer: Both IELTS Academic and TOEFL iBT are accepted by every Australian university and by the Department of Home Affairs for skilled migration (subclasses 189, 190, 491, 482, 186) and student visas (500). For PR points, IELTS 6.0 = TOEFL 60 (Competent, 0 points), IELTS 7.0 = TOEFL 79-93 (Proficient, 10 points), IELTS 8.0 = TOEFL 94+ (Superior, 20 points). PTE Academic is also accepted and is often the smartest pick for candidates with test anxiety or strong reading-but-weak-speaking profiles. Cost in Australia: IELTS AUD $410, TOEFL AUD $290, PTE AUD $410. Honest take below — neither test is universally "easier"; the right one depends on your profile.

The short version: who should take what
- You have strong reading/grammar but freeze in face-to-face speaking → PTE Academic first, TOEFL second, IELTS last.
- You are conversationally fluent but writing feels stiff → IELTS (Speaking is interactive and rewards natural flow).
- You suffer test anxiety with a human examiner staring at you → TOEFL or PTE (both are recorded onto a computer; no human in the room).
- You want fastest results → PTE (48 hours) > TOEFL (4-8 days) > IELTS (3-13 days).
- You are applying to a university that prefers paper-based → IELTS (still offered on paper in most Australian cities); TOEFL is iBT-only.
- You need TOEFL Home Edition (at-home) → fine for most universities, but NOT accepted for Australian skilled migration. PR applicants must take it in-centre.
Australia's English Score Equivalence Table 2026
This is the official Department of Home Affairs equivalence used for skilled-migration points and most university entry requirements:
| Level | IELTS (each band) | TOEFL iBT (each section) | PTE Academic (each) | PR Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Functional | 4.5 overall | 32 overall | 30 overall | visa eligibility only |
| Vocational | 5.0 each | L4 R4 W14 S14 | 36 each | 0 |
| Competent | 6.0 each | L12 R13 W21 S18 (~60 total) | 50 each | 0 |
| Proficient | 7.0 each | L24 R24 W27 S23 (~79-93 total) | 65 each | 10 |
| Superior | 8.0 each | L28 R29 W30 S26 (~94+ total) | 79 each | 20 |
Note: the "each" column means every section must hit that score, not just the overall. This is the single most common mistake — students see "TOEFL 94 = Superior" and forget all four sections must individually reach the threshold.

Where each test is genuinely "easier" — by candidate type
Type 1: South/Southeast Asian university grad, strong grammar, weak conversational confidence
This is the most common Australia-bound profile (Indian, Filipino, Vietnamese, Sri Lankan engineering / nursing / IT graduates). The IELTS face-to-face Speaking test rewards extended fluent answers — and many candidates in this group score 6.0-6.5 on Speaking despite being 7.0+ on Reading and Writing, simply because they freeze in the live interview. PTE Academic is the smarter first choice: recorded short answers are more forgiving, and Pearson's algorithm scores fluency mathematically rather than impressionistically. TOEFL is the second choice for the same reason. IELTS only makes sense if you genuinely enjoy live conversation.
Type 2: Native-region English speaker (Philippines, India English-medium, etc.) with strong fluency but weaker formal writing
If you grew up speaking English in school and your weakness is formal academic writing, IELTS is usually the kindest. The IELTS Writing rubric rewards clear, well-organised essays even if vocabulary is not flashy. TOEFL Writing has the dreaded "Integrated Writing" task (read + listen + write a synthesis), which trips up many candidates. PTE Writing is short and mathematical — fine if you write to a formula, hard if you don't.
Type 3: Test-anxiety candidate, especially with face-to-face speaking
If a human examiner makes you sweat, skip IELTS. TOEFL or PTE — both record your speaking onto a computer with no human in the room. PTE wins on speed (48-hour results) and consistency (algorithmic scoring removes examiner variation). TOEFL wins on price (AUD $290 vs $410).
Type 4: PhD applicant or specialised academic
Most Australian universities accept all three equally for graduate research. TOEFL has a slight edge in academic listening (the lectures are genuinely college-level), so if you have weak academic listening but strong everyday listening, IELTS or PTE may flatter your score.
Type 5: 482 / 189 / 190 visa applicant chasing the 20-point Superior English bonus
The 20 PR points for Superior English (IELTS 8.0 each / TOEFL 94+ each / PTE 79 each) is the single highest-leverage points category in the skilled migration calculator. PTE Academic is mathematically the easiest path for most candidates because the algorithm is more forgiving on accent and the 90-point scale gives more room for partial credit. About 60% of successful 20-point claimants we see take PTE. IELTS 8.0 each is brutal — getting Speaking 8.0 with a non-native examiner-and-candidate combo is genuinely hard. TOEFL 94+ requires every section above 23-24, with Listening being the bottleneck for most non-native speakers.
Test-day experience: what actually happens
IELTS in Australia
You will go to an IDP or British Council centre. Listening, Reading, Writing happen back-to-back over 2h 40m — no breaks, paper or computer. Speaking is a separate appointment, usually the same day or within 7 days, with a real certified examiner across a desk. The examiner is friendly but trained to maintain a neutral face — don't take the lack of smile as a sign you're bombing. Speaking is recorded for quality control.
TOEFL iBT in Australia
ETS centre, headphones on the whole time. Reading and Listening first, 10-minute break, then Speaking and Writing. Speaking is the strangest part for newcomers — you talk to a microphone in a room full of other test takers also talking. The background noise is real and you have to push through it.
PTE Academic in Australia
Pearson VUE centre, individual booth, headphones, microphone. Speaking and Writing are combined into a single section that comes first. Same room-full-of-talkers issue as TOEFL but the 20 task types break the test into shorter segments, which many candidates find less exhausting. Results land in your email inbox within 48 hours, often within 24.
Which is accepted for what — Australian-specific
Universities (subclass 500 student visa)
All three accepted at every Group of Eight university (Melbourne, Sydney, ANU, UQ, Monash, UWA, Adelaide, UNSW) and every other public university. Most ELICOS pathway colleges accept all three plus Cambridge and Duolingo. Always check the specific course page — some MBA and law programmes have higher minimums (e.g. IELTS 7.5 with no band below 7.0).
Skilled migration (189, 190, 491)
All three accepted for points-tested visas. Use the equivalence table above. Note: TOEFL Home Edition and PTE Academic Online are NOT accepted — you must sit the in-centre version.
Employer sponsored (482 TSS, 186 ENS)
All three accepted at "Vocational English" level (IELTS 5.0 each / TOEFL ~32 each / PTE 36 each) for most occupations. Some occupations require Competent (6.0 each).
Partner / family visas (820/801, 309/100)
Functional English required if applicable, very low bar (IELTS 4.5 average). All three accepted; most applicants take whichever is cheapest and closest.
Australian Permanent Residency (general skilled migration)
The most common reason people search this comparison. The 0/10/20 PR points system uses the equivalence table above. 10 points is usually the right target — chasing 20 is high-effort, high-reward, and many candidates spend 6+ months retesting for that final band.
Cost & logistics in Australia 2026
- IELTS: AUD $410. Booked via ielts.idp.com or British Council. Slots available in every capital and many regional cities.
- TOEFL iBT: AUD $290. Booked via ets.org/toefl. ETS centres in major cities only.
- PTE Academic: AUD $410. Booked via pearsonpte.com. Pearson VUE centres in all capitals plus several regional locations.
- Late booking fee applies on all three for slots within 48-72 hours.
- Reschedule policies vary — IELTS gives full refund 5+ weeks out, TOEFL 4+ days out, PTE 14+ days out.
Can I take more than one and use the better score?
Yes — and many candidates do. There's no penalty for taking IELTS, scoring 6.5, then taking PTE and scoring 79. You submit whichever certificate gets you the visa points or university offer you need. The catch: each test costs AUD $290-410 and 4-7 hours of a Saturday. Smart approach: take a free diagnostic mock first (English AIdol offers full mocks for IELTS, TOEFL and PTE), see which test flatters your profile, then commit.
How AI prep changes the calculus in 2026
Until 2024, IELTS had a clear coaching advantage in Australia — there were more IELTS prep schools, more textbooks, more test-prep teachers. PTE prep was thinner. In 2026 that gap is closed: AI graders calibrated to each test's rubric give you instant feedback on Writing and Speaking at a fraction of the cost of a private tutor.
Honest disclosure: I run English AIdol, which offers AI mocks for all three tests in 20+ languages. We're calibrated to within ±0.5 IELTS bands, ±3 PTE points, and ±5 TOEFL points of the official scoring. We're not the only good option — Magoosh and Cambly have strong tutor networks, official ETS practice tests are still the gold standard for raw TOEFL exposure, and IDP's "IELTS Progress Check" is examiner-rated. Use whatever works. The point is: in 2026, "I can't afford a coach" is no longer a reason to default to IELTS.
The decision tree
- What are you applying for? University → all three fine. Skilled migration → confirm in-centre version (no Home Edition / Online for PR).
- Are you chasing the 20-point Superior bonus? Try a free PTE mock first — if you score 75+, push for 79. If you score below 70, drop to chasing 10 points instead.
- Do you panic with a human examiner? TOEFL or PTE.
- Is your weakness formal writing? IELTS Writing rubric is the most forgiving for clear-but-not-flashy writing.
- Is budget tight? TOEFL is AUD $120 cheaper than IELTS or PTE.
- Do you need results next week? PTE.
Frequently asked questions
Is IELTS or TOEFL easier for Australia?
Neither is universally easier. IELTS is friendlier if you're conversationally fluent and comfortable with a human examiner. TOEFL is friendlier if you have strong academic listening and prefer recorded speaking. PTE — although a third option — is mathematically the most achievable for many Australia-bound candidates because the algorithm scores fluency more leniently than human examiners.
Which gives more points for Australian PR?
All three give the same points (0, 10, or 20) — the difference is which one you can actually hit Superior on. For most candidates, PTE 79 is achievable in fewer attempts than IELTS 8.0 each or TOEFL 94+ each.
Can I take both IELTS and TOEFL?
Yes. There's no rule against multiple tests. Take whichever gets you the score you need. Many candidates take a free mock of all three, then commit to whichever flatters their profile.
How long is my IELTS or TOEFL valid for Australian visas?
3 years from the test date for skilled migration. Universities typically accept results valid for 2 years from the start of your course.
What's the best AI prep for IELTS and TOEFL in 2026?
Honest list: for IELTS, English AIdol (free mocks in 20+ languages, calibrated AI), Magoosh IELTS, and IDP's own IELTS Progress Check. For TOEFL, English AIdol's TOEFL portal, Magoosh TOEFL, and ETS's own Official TOEFL practice tests (paid but the most accurate). Use AI for daily volume practice and 1-2 sessions of certified human feedback for blind spots.
Is TOEFL Home Edition accepted for Australian student visa?
Most Australian universities accept TOEFL Home Edition for course entry. However, the Department of Home Affairs does NOT accept TOEFL Home Edition for skilled migration visas (189, 190, 491, 482, 186). If you're applying for PR, take in-centre TOEFL iBT only.
Is PTE Academic better than TOEFL for Australia?
For PR-points purposes, often yes — the PTE 79 (Superior) target is generally easier to hit than TOEFL 94+ each section. For university entry only, the two are equivalent. PTE wins on speed (48-hour results vs 4-8 days for TOEFL).
