Sample Band 8 Answer (Free Time)

Q: "What do you do in your free time?"

> I'd say I spend most of my free time either reading novels or going for long walks — both help me unwind after a demanding workweek. Reading's always been my favorite escape because it lets me live different lives through characters, and walking gives me a chance to clear my head. Occasionally I meet friends for coffee too, though less often than I'd like.

That's ~50 words in 3 sentences, using less-common vocabulary (unwind, demanding, escape), a linking word (because), and a contrast (though). Natural Band 8 Part 1 response.

5 Mistakes That Cap You at Band 6 in Part 1

  1. One-word answers. "Yes, I do." → Band 5. Always add a reason + example.
  2. Memorized answers. Examiners spot them in 10 seconds; score drops.
  3. Too long (>60 seconds per answer) — Part 1 rewards natural brevity, not monologues.
  4. No range. Same grammar patterns repeated = ceiling at 6.0. Mix simple + complex.
  5. Over-hedging. "Maybe I think probably..." kills fluency score.

The Band 8 Part 1 Formula

Every answer should have 3 layers:

  1. Direct answer (1 sentence)
  2. Reason (1 sentence)
  3. Detail or contrast (1 sentence)

Total: 3–4 sentences, 30–50 words, 15–20 seconds. That's the sweet spot.

FAQ

Q: How many questions in Part 1? A: 10–12 questions across 2–3 topics, 4–5 minutes total.

Q: Can I ask the examiner to repeat? A: Yes, once or twice. More than that drops fluency.

Q: Is it OK to give fake answers? A: Yes — examiners don't care about truthfulness, only language quality.

Q: Can I memorize Part 1 answers? A: No. Examiners penalize memorized responses.

Q: How long should each answer be? A: 15–25 seconds per question. 3–4 sentences.
