Calculate your IELTS overall band and understand whether one weak section is blocking your university, visa, or professional target.
The overall IELTS band is an average, but many universities and visa programs require no section below a specific score. A candidate with 7.5 overall can still miss a requirement if Writing is 6.0 and the program requires 6.5 in every section.
After calculating your score, look at the smallest section gap. If one section is 0.5 below the minimum, practise that section before chasing a higher overall band. This is often faster and cheaper than retaking all four skills without a plan.
The overall band score is the average of your four section scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
For IELTS Academic Reading, you typically need 30-32 correct answers out of 40 to achieve band 7.0.
