For the UK Skilled Worker visa (including Health & Care Worker route), you need to prove English at CEFR B1 minimum — which maps to IELTS 4.0 in each section (Life Skills B1 or IELTS for UKVI).
UKVI accepts these Secure English Language Tests (SELTs):
| Test | CEFR B1 Required | |------|------------------| | IELTS for UKVI (Academic or GT) | 4.0 in each section | | IELTS Life Skills B1 | Pass | | PTE Home UKVI | 43 each section | | LanguageCert SELT | B1 pass | | Trinity GESE Grade 5 | Pass |
Life Skills is shortest and cheapest if B1 is all you need.
The Skilled Worker visa has a special Health and Care Worker subtype. Language requirement:

Read our dedicated guide: IELTS vs OET for Nurses. NMC accepts both IELTS Academic (7.0 each) and OET (B each). Most international nurses take OET because medical content is easier.

Health and Care roles may also involve professional registration requirements, so check both the visa rule and the regulator or employer rule before booking a test.

IELTS for UKVI vs Regular IELTS

If your visa route requires a Secure English Language Test, you may need IELTS for UKVI or another approved SELT rather than regular IELTS Academic or General Training. Booking the wrong test can waste time and money, so confirm the test name before payment.

Exemptions and Evidence

Some applicants may meet the English requirement through nationality, previous UK-recognised degree study, or other approved evidence. Exemptions are specific; do not assume you qualify without checking the official guidance and keeping documents ready.

Preparation Checklist

Confirm the required level, approved test provider, test centre, result validity, and application deadline. If you only need B1, the strategy is different from IELTS 7.0 university preparation: prioritise clear everyday communication, basic writing control, listening accuracy, and confidence under test conditions.
